Glenn - good to read your voice again. Iowa is only a temporary experience for you; you'll move on from there when the time is right. Until then, try to enjoy the beauty you can find there.
It's certainly not a "destination" most folks would choose, but since you are there, recognize the joys unique to that location - an incredible range of seasons that many of your Hawai`i Island friends will never know, the beauty of the Mississippi River, the rolling hillsides, the gorgeous color-changing farmlands, the opportunity to find quiet stretches of backroads with nothing to disrupt you but a wide-open sky, a lingering sunset and the beautiful call of the red-winged blackbird.
It's not home - but anywhere you go will have charms if you allow them to be seen. |

One time I had to go to Rock Island, IL for my work. They get one Army arsenal ova dea. I was so excited to see the Mississippi River for the first time, but auwe, was liddo. Was not da raging big river I thought was. Well maybe it was bigger dan I thought cause Rock Island is one Island in da middo of the river., but. I think that is close to whea Braddah Glenn stay. They get plenny rain and floods ova dea also too.
It has got to be so hard to save up all da vacation time fo go one trip home. Den come back to da yucky weddah. And the grayness. Gray, gray, gray., Need sunlight. Az y hahd. |

Kay den, some plenny time I nevah make um to da lo'i. Den wen take me coupla tree day foa catch up. Plenny time I like trow in da two cent, bu no can cause no moa sense wen da buggah stay plenny pages latah.
I like hea da menpachiman story, cause da beeg island da one! Jus hope does no was frens of mine dat wen make. Get plenny too many lolo fishahman fren, stay tired fo hea dey wen make ahready. My daughtah wen call dis morning, tell me one fren I know from da day da buggah born wen make- lolo head wen take too many pill. Donno was wrong wi dat generation- befoa time lil bit fragrant smoke was nuff for keep da braddahs happi, an dat kine nevah hurt no body. Nowdaze all da dumasses like take any kine chemicals, den dey hit da ones dey love, steal from da ohana, an make lef an rite. Stupid. An not onli waz da kane raised wid my daughtah, but he wen make on da anavesery of da day my daughtahs boyfren, faddah of my granson, wen make from da same stupid shit.
Anyway, make me laff wen I hea buggahs stay talk bout how da yellow opihi hard fo get. On our aina we get so many, we nevah use knife lidat- if no can whackum wid da hand, den jus get da next one. Oa scare um offa da rock wid one snail- eveah try dat one? Some funny dat! One DLNR biologist stay tell me he wen count moa opihi on one pohaku on our aina den he wen count on da entire moku o Oahu...
Heas da secret. We get fishing rights from Kalakaua on oua ahupua'a. So we no moa shame fo tell da bruddahs we get rules. And da kapu is, no take da ophi nui! Das da one make all da keiki. Small kine all right, moa tendah does ones. An da quatah size ones, das O.K. too. But you take da half dollah size one, we nevah like you come back, cause you wen stole from da fuchah. Das da one goine repopulate da moku. Dose opihi, dey spread out from our ahupua'a- da furdah you go, da less opihi. O'ahu fah from Kohala side- das why no moa ovah dere. Cause da greedy buggahs already wen steal yoa fuchah on O'ahu, den dey wen sell yoa fuchah fo coupla beahs.
And das da oddah rule- onli home use. We no goine let you take oua opihi anden sell um. Das stealing. None of dose opihi is yoas, so how come you tink you can sell dem? How bout da next opihi pickah who like some foa da ohana? But you wen take um all? Greedy, dat. Is wrong.
So you get one big luau stay coming, need plenny- das all right, we get plenny cause we get da kapu. But mo bettah you invite us to da luau, cause if no moa luau den mo bettah you nevah come back.
Get so many opihi one time dese O'ahu boys, dey like come steal fo sell on O'ahu. Too greedy, dough- wen dey like fly out da opihi, dey wen try take too many bag and dat helicopter wen crash on da mountain. Lef some bag behine, too- 100 poun bags of opihi rotting on da pohaku. Was one big opihi roast on da mountain- pua'a loa too. Dat pilot was one good guy- one of the Sproats- but wen he wen back foa save da O'ahu boys da helicopter wen explode an he wen make. Mebbe you wen hea dis befoa, in da Advertiser, cept dey wen leave out da part bout stealing opihi and greed.
So deres one wintah story- I get moa fo say but kinda depressing kine. Tinking bout it, dis waz kinda depressing kine too, but stay light in comparison. So I goine leave um at dat.
Chris
