           	| I was doing my radio show yesterday and I noticed there were a large number of names on my playlist that were also well known Kumu Hula.
I'd like some more names to be added to my quick list below. I expect that this will be a pretty impressive list.

 Robert Cazimero
 John Ka'imikaua
 Keali'i Reichel
 Kealoha Kalama
 Bill Ali'iloa Lincoln
 Tony Conjugacion
 Leilani Rivera Bond
 Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu
 Frank K. Hewett

                      | I am not surprised at the number of kumu hula who are recording artists. Don't forget Aunty Mapuana de Silva who recorded "Hanohano Wailea" as a chant on Kawai Cockett's CD, `O Ka`ohao Ku`u `Aina Nani" which I dearly wish I could find. If you isten to the melody, it may sound familiar. It is the tune to "Good King Wenceslas". They came up with that meody for the chant before Uncle Moe had written the melody for the song (which came to him in a dream and he woke up and wrote it in about 15 minutes.)

                      | When a kumu teaches you a mele to dance to, they usually sing it to you as they are teaching. That way they can slow it down or speed it up as the skill of the haumana increases. Also, when they teach a chant, there is a distinct "melody" to them, and that is very important to get the raising or lowering of the voice in the right places, speed of the words, where to take breaths, etc. that the kumu teaches. I have been blown away by some of the harmonies I have heard from kumu hula and their advanced students (especially of the Merrie Monarch caliber) when they are either chanting or singing a mele in such sweet harmonies. A thang of bee-yoo-tee. Ahhhh.
I think bottom line of what I am trying to say is that meticulous detail to melodies is also part of what a kumu hula teaches, therefore, they need to have the skill themselves.

                      | My show had 28 solo tracks without repeating any kumu hula, but having to leave off a few. Judging by the phone calls, texts and emails I received during and after the show, it was a real hit with the listeners. Got a lot of "do this again!" requests, so perhaps I'll do "Kumu Hula Recordings Vol 2" sometime.
Playlist will be posted later today:
