Paul would love to work on a canoe lidat. We read a swell book a while back, a very interesting novel called The Red Wind. Amongst other things, it was about building a wa`a the old ways, no power tools, making sure to get the proper wood, getting it blessed before beginning and making sure to have a proper naming ceremony when it was pau before putting it in the water.

We went to the Maritime Museum near Aloha Tower but no Hokule`a. Does anyone know of a canoe project like this one in Willie's video on Maui? If so, that would be a swell way to give back to Hawaiian culture, to work on a canoe while we are visiting O`ahu. It also is a good way to teach the keiki so much about their heritage, but also other skills they need in every day life, like persverance and discipline and honor. Like working together for a common purpose; how many hands make light work.

At NW FOlklife Festival a few years ago, there was a room with representatives of the local tribes working on canoes. You could talk story with the guys and they told about their tools, designs, differences between tribes lidat. the cedar smelled great, too. Baritone is helping with canoe culture revitalization for the tribes around Port Madison, WA. When my dad was a kid, the 4th of July was a big day for canoe racing in the Puget Sound area.
