Now maybe the news shows around here going show real news instead of moaning about what might happen if LeBron does not re-sign with the Cavs. Guess what? I still woke up this morning and Lake Erie is still in the same place it was when I went to bed last night. Sheesh. They should know after Rocky Colavito, or when Carlos Baerga got traded or Manny left and then Thome left....good players never stay in Cleveland, its a podunk town and team owners are never willing to pay the kind of money it takes to keep someone here. All they needed to do was hike the cost of hot dogs to maybe 8 dollars instead of 6 dollars.

We know the feeling here in Seattle, too, with the SuperSonics gone, ARod gone, etc. |

That's why we play and listen to music. The world of sports just offers opportunities to injure hands, fingers, etc. Sure, we enjoy the discipline and resulting skill of an athelete, but they are only human like us. At least, that's what I was told. Something happens when people sit in rows, especiallly when money is involved. |

Sporting events --- concerts --- speeches --- church --- --- ---
Shall we gather in a circle instead? Or maybe around a table, groaning with shared vittles. See you at some of those, soon. |

*** stepping onto soap box ***
We as a society attach way too much importance to celebrity. We reward shameful behavior just because someone has an incredible talent in acting, musicianship or athleticism. We tie our own sense of worth to the success or failure of a group in which we cannot participate, crying at a team's loss or gloating in its victory, when we ourselves have no part in either result. We allow our dislike for some team to justify hatred toward that same team's fans. We teach the extraordinarily talented that normal rules of society don't apply to them. We feed their egos and enable their greed. And we feel betrayed that they feel no obligation to return our support with loyalty.
"King James" is just the latest example; he's not the first and, sadly, won't be the last. Unless we as a society suddenly wake up and realize that these "heroes" only play a game, sing a song, or pretend to be some character.
Some are generous with time and money, don't get me wrong. But in terms of that for which they are rewarded so handsomely rewarded, it's not that important. Home run, slam dunk, flashy lights & choreography? Gimme a break. Bus drivers, garbage collectors, and store clerks actually contribute more to a healthy society - they provide direct services that help people.
[sigh]

"None of us is as crazy all of us." There is a corolary of pay for actual importance of task performed. Rock star - Mega$, crop picker (as in food that we actually eat), minimum wage. Or how about someone working in a geriatric facility? Shiney and glitzy sell, mundanely stable humanity doesn't. Keep yer soap box handy, Ben, you get plenny opportunity. |
