The quilt (often packing blankets) is being used as a "gobo" or sound control panel. It reduces early reflections and "bleed" or sound from other sources.
The recording engineer would prefer to have the cleanest sound from each performer, with as little of "da udda guy" as possible. Packing blankets are a portable, fairly low cost tool for this job. People also use office partitions for this, or custom made partitions, but they're more bulky to store. I make panels out of compressed fiberglass wrapped in burlap and use them to control reflections and bleed. I did a video demonstrating the construction of these panels: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2009/03/06/building-a-broadband-absorber-on-the-cheap/

The quilts are there to absorb sound, so you don't get each guitarist's sound "bleeding" over into the other guitarist's microphone, since they are sitting facing each other li'dat. It keeps the two distinct guitars as cleaner separate tracks - a key point for mixing.
If you pause the video at the right point, you can briefly see Charles Michael Brotman in the control booth (it's his studio, where most of the Palm Records material is recorded). http://www.lavatracks.com/ |

Hey Doug,
Great to hear from you! You were definitely missed at the workshop this year - hope you can make it back for the next one.
Meeting Liko Martin and getting to play his song (Waimanalo/Nanakuli Blues) at the MACC Slack Key Festival with him was an amazing experience - it capped off a truly memorable workshop week.
A hui hou,
Scott |

I spock a couple Taropatchers: Standing right behind George K., with the big smile, is Bwop. That pretty dark haired woman, just to the right of Liko Martin, in the back row is Julie H.
