HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - He was a legendary master of the sea. Polynesian navigator, Mau Piailug has passed away. Piailug was one of the last to navigate the Pacific without the use of instruments.
He used only the sun, stars and his instincts.
Piailug was best known for guiding the Hokulea from Hawaii to Tahiti on its maiden voyage in 1976.
He then trained and mentored navigator Nainoa Thompson.
He died Sunday night on his home island of Satawal.
