This first one is from 1990, two wonderful performers billed as Peter & Perry. You will be tickled to find that Peter is Pekelo Cosma. Does anyone know who Perry is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOk1k0rG4Is

Now Auntie does not know who this is from 1993, but sure reminds me of Troy Fernandez sound. Could it be? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ywm8bioW5g

Here are the winners from 1994. Could this be an earlier incarnation of Na Palapalai? Is that Kehau Tamure singing? I just cannot tell, since I am so new to Hawaiian music. Whoever it is, no wonder they won. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivSWcUzuWvo

If any of you know who is in these videos, please let us know. Goes to show how important a contest is Ka Himeni Ana.

The guitar player/lead vocalist in the second video looks like Brian Mersberg from "Na Kama"to me. So that makes me wonder if the ukulele/guitar player on the left might be Eric Lee.

Before Ka Himene Ana was held at Hawaii Theater, the contest was staged at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Orvis Auditorium, UH Music Department. I shot the early videos of Ka Himene Ana 1983-1995 from my upstairs office. I was the University component of this wonderful contest put on by Richard Towill of R.M. Towill, Corporation.

The original production team included Richard Towill, Marge Hansen, Aunty Irmgard Aluli, Uncle Charles K.L. Davis, Uncle Keola Beamer Sr., Aunty Nona Beamer and myself (I used to hang out with some really old guys, they were all my parents age). Sorry about the quality of the video through the years and evidently several generations of copying the images are poor. We never had enough light and the camera was not one of broadcast quality. Because I was responsible for the onsite event about all I could do was turn on the camera and then run downstairs and help take care of the contestants and the needs of the audience.

Although the contest was held in August, it was always sold out by March. Getting an audience was no problem, getting enough groups together to do an unplugged session was always a problem. On more than one occasion it was almost canceled for the lack of contestants.

The first duo you mentioned are two cousins from Hana, Maui. They are Peter Cosma on guitar and Perry Artante on uke. Singing the mele pana "Koali" as Gabby would have, they easily smoked the competition and were the champs that year.

The second trio is known as the Kanile'a Collection comprised of Eric Lee on uke, Brian Merseberg on guitar, and Jay Kauka (who is a Beamer). They were the champs that year.

I lost my notes and I don't remember who the third group, but it is not Kehau.

Those were fun days I always enjoyed this contest because I was a part of it, nowadays aloha ino. But the contest goes on with new faces and is always a treat for those who are lucky enough to attend.

Wow. Tanks eh Ed and Prof. Petah. How cool it is that you took the videos of the show, Petah. Some fun times you musta had (after you worked your okole off).

So if they are unplugged, how you get good sound on the videos?

And thanks, Norm, no the keen eye. Was fun to watch these. This is the kind of stuff I just love.

Squid eye??? Das one great compliment for sure!! Lucky for me that I'm a huge fan of Brian and not only recognized his voice but the way he moves while he sings on stage. Sometimes you don't need a scorecard to tell the players. Thanks for the original post, Wanda. I love this kinda stuff also.

Ed, seeing all those names listed in the article just reinforces the fact of how much talent there is in Hawai'i. Some names that are familiar, but many names of supremely talented people that for the most part are (and what a shame for this) obscure to most of us.

Peter, the film is a treasure.

Good to see Kanile`a Collection "live" -- their long-out-of-print 1994 CD (Nahenahe) has been one of my favorites forever.

And the Chang Family kids went on to become the hugely popular group, Kanilau (featuring brother & sister Alapai and Roland, with their spouses Tiare Noelani and Kimo Artis).

Now I gotta get back to viewing the videos...!

Good news Auntie Maria!! According to information from Eric Lee's website (http://ericleehawaii.com/discography.html), Nahenahe by The Kanile'a Collection is available for download at iTunes and the Amazon mp3 store

I think Kanilau won in ʻ95 that the year my friends asked me to participate and we bombed. We startedas atrio and the uke player changed his strings the day before. Heh,heh you know what that does. Then the bass player added a fourth player the day of the contest who didnʻt practice with us so he didnʻt know the arrangements and he just took up space. So flat uke and new player plus nervous as hell we just went out and made A big time. Haunani Apoliona was one of the judges and man I was scared shirtless. The experience was priceless though. Had many stars there like Darin Benitez and George Naope and many others.

Josh Kamuelaonapuaokupanihi Chang says that is his grandmother, father, brothers & sisters. Josh is son of I think Randy (is he the kumu hula?), and you may have seen me post Josh's videos here. Remember the hot, hot dancing of Maunaloa, hula like Auntie neva see before. So as you can see, the talent is still continuing in that family. Josh says the videos make him cry. That is why they are so precious.
